Best Photo Spots in Washington, DC for Groups
Washington, DC is one of the most visited group destinations in the world, and for good reason. School trips, corporate teams, family reunions, tour groups, youth organizations, government agencies, and international visitors all find their way here every year. Between the monuments, the memorials, and the history — there is truly no better backdrop for a group that wants to mark a moment worth remembering. Since 1919, Central Photo Company has specialized in capturing every single person in the frame at the places that matter most.
We photograph groups at Washington, DC's most iconic landmarks every week of the year. The U.S. Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, and the United States Air Force Memorial. Groups and tour operators have trusted Central for decades because we show up, we get it right, and we leave every group with something real to take home. The eighth grade trip to Washington, DC became a tradition long before anyone was posting about it. Groups came, they stood at these landmarks, and they left with a photograph that proved they were there. That photograph went on the classroom wall. A parent framed it. A teacher pulled it out at a reunion twenty years later. It traveled to college dorms and ended up in scrapbooks and showed younger siblings what was waiting for them when it was their turn. That is what we are here to make. Use this guide to find the right spot for your group, and book your session.
You bring the group. We handle everything else.
The Defining Shot
U.S. Capitol Building (Ulysses S. Grant Memorial)
There is no more recognizable backdrop in American democracy than the Capitol dome. The Ulysses S. Grant Memorial at its base gives us something most monument locations don't: depth, drama, and a foreground that earns its place in the frame. Groups of any size find their place here — from 3 people to 300 — and everyone belongs in this frame. This is consistently the portrait that ends up on the classroom wall, the yearbook spread, the annual report. And it stays there.
When to Book
Mon–Sat, Year-Round
Spring is the classic Capitol portrait window, with bright air and full party energy. Fall and winter make the marble and sky stand out sharper, so the finished photo looks cleaner and more cinematic. We're available Monday through Saturday, 9am-5pm.
Group Size
Any Size
The tiered grounds handle groups of all sizes naturally. From small family reunions to large safety patrol groups, everyone finds their place here.
Our Format
Panoramic Portrait
Wide, perfectly composed, every face visible. Our signature format since 1919, built for exactly this location.
The Capitol grounds are designed at a scale that photographs beautifully with groups of any size. The broad, tiered steps leading up from the Grant Memorial create a natural formation that works whether you've got a small family or a large delegation, without anyone feeling cramped or hidden. Groups from school trips to corporate teams choose this as their central portrait moment, and it consistently delivers.
The Grant Memorial itself anchors the foreground with real visual weight. The bronze cavalry figures and the reflecting pools give the image depth that flat steps alone cannot provide. We position your group to take full advantage of that composition.
Standing here with the Capitol dome behind your group isn't just about the photo—it's about capturing a moment in front of the heart of American democracy, a memory that connects your group to this place forever.
When your group stands in front of the Capitol for the first time, they already understand what this photograph means.
Whether a group has come from down the street or from the other side of the world, this tends to be the portrait they want on the wall.

Book NowElegance on the Tidal Basin
Thomas Jefferson Memorial
The Thomas Jefferson Memorial brings something distinct to group portraiture: a circular colonnade, a domed rotunda, and the Tidal Basin reflecting it all back. Whether it's family reunions gathering for a cherished memory or school trips exploring history, this backdrop has defined DC photography for generations and works beautifully with groups of every size and season.

The stairs and portico work beautifully for groups up to 200. The circular plaza accommodates larger gatherings around it.
Backdrop
Rotunda & Colonnade
The circular colonnaded design gives group portraits a depth that flat steps alone cannot provide. One of the most architecturally distinct backdrops in Washington, DC.
The Jefferson Memorial is modeled on the Pantheon in Rome, and the comparison holds photographically. The circular colonnaded design gives group portraits natural depth. The columns draw the eye inward while suggesting the scale of the space behind your group. We work the steps, the portico, and the plaza depending on group size and what the light is doing.
For family reunions, this location has a track record. Families come back to DC for anniversary trips and specifically request this spot because the photo from five or ten years ago is hanging in someone's dining room. A Central Photo portrait from the Jefferson Memorial has a way of earning its place on the wall for decades, which is exactly what we set out to produce every time.
If your dates fall during cherry blossom season, reach out as early as you can. Those weeks fill faster than anything else on our calendar, and we'd love to save you a spot.

The Lincoln Memorial steps have welcomed group portraits for as long as we've been in this business. We photograph school trips, tour groups, family reunions, and international visitors from the plaza below, with those grand marble columns rising behind them. When families and students see that finished portrait, they carry home not just a photo, but a piece of this historic moment they shared together. There is simply nowhere else like it.

Steps + Memorial Columns
When you see your group on those steps, with Lincoln's columns rising behind them, you understand why this photograph has mattered for so long.
For many students, this is the stop where the trip becomes real. They've read about this place. They've seen it in textbooks and news footage. Standing on the steps is a different experience entirely, and the best group photos capture that energy rather than just documenting the geometry.
The steps naturally tier your group and give everyone a clean sightline. We photograph from the plaza below, placing the memorial's full sweep of columns and steps behind your group. Our panoramic format is built for exactly this kind of setting.
When you see your group on those steps, with Lincoln's columns rising behind them, you understand why this photograph has mattered for so long.
We photograph here year-round, and there's something worth recommending about every season. A crisp winter morning with few crowds and dramatic skies produces some of our most striking portraits. Summer's long golden-hour days have their own magic. If your dates are flexible, we're genuinely happy to talk through what tends to look best for the type of trip you're planning.
The Icon Itself
Washington Monument
At 555 feet, the Washington Monument is the most recognizable structure on the DC skyline. Up close, on the ground, surrounded by the ring of American flags, it is something else entirely. Scale changes everything here, and our panoramic format captures the full scale beautifully. Whether it's corporate teams building esprit de corps, school trips, or groups seeking an iconic backdrop, this location delivers impact.

The Stone of Hope
Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the Tidal Basin is one of the most visually striking and emotionally resonant spaces in all of Washington, DC. The 30-foot granite Stone of Hope, carved with Dr. King emerging from the mountain of despair, creates a backdrop that you simply cannot find anywhere else. Whether it's youth groups learning about civil rights, community organizations honoring their work, family reunions creating meaningful memories, or school trips exploring American history, this location provides a powerful and reflective setting.
When to Book
Spring Cherry Blossoms
If your trip falls during Tidal Basin cherry blossom season, this is a sought-after window. Outside of spring, you'll often find this one of the more unhurried and reflective corners of the Mall. We're available Monday through Saturday, 9am-5pm.
Group Size
3 to 150
A more intimate setting than the open Mall. The curved inscription wall creates natural framing for groups of 30–80.
Bonus
Tidal Basin Views
Located steps from cherry blossom country. Combine with the Jefferson Memorial for a full Tidal Basin experience.
This memorial rewards the group that wants more than the standard monument portrait. The inscription wall, bearing words from Dr. King's speeches and writings, wraps around the space and gives us a continuous backdrop that works beautifully with smaller clusters within a larger group. It photographs with a contemplative quality that tends to draw something more genuine out of the people in the frame.
We position groups to take full advantage of the Stone of Hope's scale. Standing slightly below and in front of the sculpture, your group takes on a visual relationship with the figure that feels purposeful and powerful.
This is also a natural pairing with the Jefferson Memorial, just an easy walk around the Tidal Basin. If you're planning to visit both, let us know and we'll build that into your session.
Duty. Honor. Legacy.
U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial
The United States Marine Corps War Memorial, known worldwide as the Iwo Jima Memorial, is one of the most recognized monuments on earth. For ROTC groups, Honor Flight participants, veteran organizations, military units, and active duty personnel, this is a deeply meaningful place. But it's also a powerful backdrop for school trips, tour groups, and families seeking a connection to American history. We approach every session here with the respect and care this location deserves.

The hillside grounds allow natural tiering. Military units of 50–150 photograph with exceptional presence here.
Location
Arlington, Virginia
Just across the Potomac from DC, adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery. Easy to combine with a cemetery visit.
Felix de Weldon spent three years creating the sculpture from Joe Rosenthal's photograph of the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi. The result retains every ounce of the original's urgency. Standing near it with a group that has any connection to military service, you feel it. Our job is to capture that, not just document the monument.
We bring the same care and attention to a small group of veterans that we bring to a large convention, because the moment demands it. Families, school trips, and tour groups feel it too — this location has a gravity that crosses every kind of connection.
The hillside placement gives us a sweeping view of the DC skyline to the east, which creates a natural backdrop for portraits that sets this location apart from anything on the Mall itself. We work with the light, the landscape, and your group to make the most of it.
Honoring a unit, a family, a generation. Let's make it permanent.

Above and Beyond
United States Air Force Memorial
Three stainless steel spires rise 270 feet, evoking a breakaway climb into open sky. The United States Air Force Memorial is unlike anything else in the DC metro area, and it photographs that way. For veteran groups, active-duty personnel, and ROTC groups, it is a deeply personal and meaningful setting. It is also simply a spectacular backdrop for any group looking for something beyond the Mall.
When to Book
Autumn & Winter
Autumn and winter often bring the clearest skies in DC, making the spires stand out sharply against the blue. We're available Monday through Saturday, 9am-5pm.
Group Size
10 to 300
The plaza and surrounding grounds accommodate medium to large groups well. The spires create dramatic vertical framing above any group size.
Bonus View
Pentagon Ridge
Situated on a ridge above the Pentagon with sweeping views of DC. One of the region's most striking elevated vantage points.
The memorial opened in 2006 and has quickly become one of the most visually compelling photography locations in the region. The three curving spires are simultaneously abstract and deeply personal to the men and women who served under the Air Force. There is no other architectural element in DC quite like them, and the portraits we produce here reflect that uniqueness.
The plaza is broad, well-maintained, and gives us clean sightlines to all three spires from multiple angles. We have developed specific arrangements for groups of all sizes that keep the architecture doing its work overhead while every person in your group remains visible in the frame.
The bronze Honor Guard figures near the base of the spires provide a meaningful compositional anchor. They elevate the portrait from a location photo into something that speaks directly to service and sacrifice. For Air Force reunions, anniversary gatherings, or active-duty unit portraits, this location carries that weight.
Philadelphia Museum of Art (The Rocky Steps)
In 2026, Central Photo Company expanded to Philadelphia, bringing our expertise in panoramic group portraits to the Rocky Steps. Whether it's school trips, corporate teams, tour groups, family reunions, youth groups, or community organizations, this location captures the energy and accomplishment of reaching the top.

The steps tier naturally for groups of all sizes. Student delegations of 300 or more work as well as a corporate team of 25.
The Moment
Unmatched Energy
Few locations bring out the kind of spontaneous joy these steps do. It makes for exceptional portraits.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art steps are among the most famous in the world. The broad neoclassical staircase climbs 99 steps from Eakins Oval to the museum's grand portico, with the Benjamin Franklin Parkway stretching behind you all the way to City Hall. It is a genuinely spectacular group photography location. The fact that everyone has already seen it in a movie just makes them more excited to be there.
For student groups making a Northeast corridor trip through DC and Philadelphia, this is an automatic stop. Tour operators who run the mid-Atlantic circuit know these steps consistently produce portraits that their groups love. The energy here is celebratory in a way that's different from a monument setting. Everyone runs to the top. That's the best part. Then we get everyone together and make the actual portrait.
We bring the same professionalism to Philadelphia that we bring to every DC landmark. The panoramic format works beautifully across the full width of the steps, and the Parkway gives the image a scale and sweep that makes every group feel like they've just accomplished something.
